Chances are pretty good that you’re at least somewhat familiar with the Law of Attraction (LOA). What few people realize is that the LOA is one of many Laws of the Universe. Gaining useful knowledge about all Laws of the Universe is a smart path towards enlightenment, self-discovery, and a life of immense satisfaction.
So is it 7, 12, or 14 universal laws? You may be a bit confused like I was. However, the simple explanation originates from the 7 Hermetic Principles that were derived from a 1908 book called the Kybalion: A Study of the Hermetic Philosophy of Ancient Egypt and Greece. The 12 Laws of the Universe build on those principles, helping to explain how everything within the universe interacts. They combine spiritual beliefs, scientific evidence, and metaphysical concepts.
Some gurus have added 2 additional laws to bring the total number universal laws to 14. These added laws permeate everything to do with manifestation and the Law of Attraction, so it can be handy to recognize them on their own: Belief and Timing. We can debate whether they should be categorized as actual laws, but we can all agree that they are critically important. We will discuss them after covering what are the 12 Laws of the Universe.
Let’s dive in, starting with the foundational law – Divine Oneness. As you study these laws, keep in mind that this is not a prioritized list. They are all equally important
Oneness speaks to our interconnectedness. Our existence fosters an illusion of separateness. But in truth, everyone and everything are infinitely connected as a whole – a oneness. Be it an energy force, a spirit, a God, or something indefinable to humans – the oneness is all of us and everything in existence.
Because of our divine oneness, the actions, thoughts, and emotions of any single individual affect and interact with others. We emit energy vibrations and frequencies that both attract and repel the energy emissions of others.
Application: Strive to emit the positive energy of unconditional love and eliminate negative energy. Promote the feeling and expression of love over anger, resentment, and hate. Accept that that is the most powerful way to represent your unique individual existence in the larger oneness that envelops all.
At the most fundamental level, everything consists of energy. You may remember from your high school science classes that energy is never at rest. It’s always in motion, even stored and potential energy. Note also that neutrons, protons, and electrons exist in all matter at a subatomic level, and these particles are always vibrating. Hence, the law of frequency or vibration.
Not a big science geek? No worries. The basic premise is this: everything and every single one of us are constantly vibrating and radiating unique frequencies. There are low vibration frequencies, mid-range vibration frequencies, and high-range vibration frequencies. By channeling, managing, and directing our vibrational frequencies out into the universe, we can harness the power of law #4 – Attraction!
Application: Monitor your energy vibe and take steps to boost it when low. For example - exercise, dance, swim, do yoga, use essential oils, meditate, or commune with nature. With a higher frequency, your magnetic pull is stronger, attracting good things.
With this law, correspondence may be better expressed as communication. It references communication amongst our inner self (mental plane), outer self (physical plane), and elevated self (spiritual plane). The connection and relationship between our earthly existence and our spiritual divine oneness (law #1) is represented in repeating patterns.
The outer world you see and experience is but a mirror of your inner self and existence. You create a self-perpetuating condition because our planes of existence are interrelated. Anything you do – no matter how small – affects everything. Think butterfly effect.
Application: Review and recognize recurring patterns in your life. For example, are you always gravitating towards a selfish mate? Do you squander money when finances are good? Acknowledge the pattern, take responsibility, and make a choice to change your mindset (your inner self) to effect change.
This is arguably the most well-known law of the universe. It’s based on the principle that “like attracts like.” Remember the Law of Vibration (#2)? We’re all vibrating on our own frequencies. So, to get and enjoy what you want in life, your energy vibrations must be on the same frequency as that which you desire.
Another element of this law is that what you focus on is delivered to you – good or bad. Therefore, you must concentrate on what you want and ignore undesirable things. In practice, that means your mantra should be “I am financially solvent and capable of earning all the money I need” instead of “I don’t want to be poor or struggling financially anymore.”
Application: Rid yourself of negativity and replace it with a positive, abundancy mindset. This way, you can emit high vibrations on the positive frequencies that attract what you wish for.
Manifestation is all well and good, but nothing comes without some effort. The Law of Inspired Action teaches us that some action on our part is necessary to produce results. However, you must not get in your own way. While this probably sounds contradictory, you have to trust in the universe when it comes to action vs. manifestation. That’s where the “inspired” part comes in.
Let creativity, innovation, inspiration, ingenuity, and vibrational insight be the motivating factors in your inspired action. This type of action energizes, elevates, and challenges you. Learn to identify inspired action and ignore insipid action that you feel compelled to perform out of routine or obligation.
Application: Align yourself with your goals and vision before acting. Be receptive to your muse, intuition, and internal motivation. Trust your “gut” and jump into inspiration when it hits. Momentum is key.
Remember when your mom demanded, “If your friends jumped off a bridge, would you leap with them?” She knew about the law of perpetual transmutation of energy, even if she wasn’t aware of its name and place among the universal laws. (Moms are clever like that.)
Essentially, energy is perpetually transforming as it’s being impacted by other vibrational energies. That means that lower energy frequencies can bring down elevated ones and higher energy vibrations can uplift lower ones.
Application: Stay positive, even on a small scale. Surround yourself with positive energy – encouraging, upbeat people. Little actions can deliver big results – smile, sing in the car, and be generous.
This law reflects what most of us comprehend as karma – what you put out there will come back on you. It’s an uncomplicated concept, actually. But you must realize that the effect of your causative action may not occur right away. The negative or positive energy you release ripples across the universe. Eventually, it flows back to you in the negative or positive form that you emitted.
Application: Just like the “Golden Rule” you should “do unto others as you would have them do unto you,” because ultimately, your actions will impact you. More importantly, by understanding all the laws of the universe, we know that everything we think, feel, and do impacts us all.
Are you noticing a theme here? You may be realizing that many of the Laws of the Universe reflect balance, equity, and how the interconnectedness of everything in the universe creates impactful relationships. With the Law of Compensation, once again, we manifest our own results – in this case, in the form of compensation. The universe compensates you for your efforts in service to others. Note that your rewards will only be equal to how much you contribute.
Application: Be generous in spirit, thoughts, intentions, and deeds. Show others kindness and help when you can. Don’t let compensation motivate you, though. That diminishes your contributions. Give and add to the happiness of others for the sheer joy of it and compensation will be a natural byproduct.
“It’s all relative. Seriously.” Your perspective is the defining characteristic of how you experience, view, and even judge life around you. Nothing has meaning or value until you compare it to something else. For example, “Is 50° hot or cold weather?” That depends on a range of subjective factors. Where do you live? What season is it? Is it an abrupt change or has it been the average temperature for several days?
Someone living in Southern Florida likely feels chilly when the temperature drops to 50° in July. But a Colorado resident would probably welcome that “balmy” 50° warm weather in the middle of January. Yet, that same person is likely to consider that 50° temperature downright chilly when it follows a heatwave in the summer. That’s the Law of Relativity. Remember that when life gets you down (and it will), think of it as helping you recognize and appreciate the immense joy that you are sure to feel and appreciate as life ebbs and flows (laws #10 & #11).
Application: Work on being objective about events and circumstances in your life that you typically view unfavorably. Ask yourself why you view something negatively. What are you comparing it to? Change your perspective and you will be happier.
For every action, there is a reaction. Dualities are an intrinsic part of the Universe. You may be more familiar with the Law of Polarity through the Yin and Yang philosophy of Taoism. There exists a polar opposite for every single thing. Keep in mind, they are two halves of a whole. There is an interdependence, so both “sides” are needed for balance.
The darker the night, the brighter the morning.
Application: Understand and accept that for there to be light, we must also have dark. To experience joy, we must also feel sadness. The Law of Polarity can help us keep things in a more neutral, objective perspective. Remember, that’s key for addressing the Law of Relativity.
The universe is cyclical. You can see examples of this everywhere – seasons, cycles of the moon, and the tides are a few popular examples. If you’re a science buff, you may also be familiar with the biogeochemical cycles in nature – photosynthesis, nitrogen cycle, water cycle, carbon and oxygen cycles, and phosphorus cycle. These cycles follow the scientific law of conservation of matter in physics that states matter is transformed from one state to another but can never be created or destroyed through a chemical reaction.
The Law of Rhythm reflects the natural cycles, patterns, stagers, ebbs and flows, and pendulum swings that occur throughout the universe, affecting everything and everyone.
Application: Acknowledge that in this life nothing is permanent, good and bad. Enjoy the upswing when you’re in a positive stage of the cycle. When you’re in a negative phase, remember that it will pass, moving into a more positive phase in due time. Apply this knowledge to keep things in perspective, and enjoy the waves throughout. A rollercoaster wouldn't be much fun without the ups and downs.
This law also parallels with Yin and Yang with regards to masculine and feminine energy. Everything in the universe is imbued with these two types of energies. There is the energetic, bright, extroverted energy and the more reclusive, dark, calm, introverted energy. The feminine side of your spirit tends to be responsive, generous, compassionate, emotional, and creative. Whereas your masculine energy is more inclined to take control, be willful, determined, dominant, results-oriented, and logical.
Having more of one than another isn't important. Your task is to recognize and embrace your divine identity while accepting and loving others unconditionally (including yourself).
Application: Practice balancing your masculine and feminine energies. Understand that this isn’t a biological gender expression. These energies influence our character traits, how we interact with others, the way we tackle problems, and numerous other factors. Be open and receptive to both sides to better handle the world around you, your challenges, and your triumphs.
Whether or not these are actual laws or simply principles that govern the Laws of the Universe is up for debate, but they are for certain critical to understanding and getting the Law of Attraction and other Universal Laws to work for you.
You may have learned that what we think about eventually becomes our reality, but few understand how powerful wholehearted belief can be in creating your reality. It doesn't matter so much if your belief is based in fact or fiction, your belief will make it so. Every law needs a dose of belief to get it going. It can be as small as a desire to believe and it will grow from there as you move forward. But it's important to not tie your belief to a timetable... That's where the Law of Gestation comes in.
Alluded to in law #7 (Cause and Effect/Giving and Receiving), This law is all about divine timing and not your timing. For some reason we tend to put dates out there and say, "If it doesn't happen by this day then it's not real..." When you do this you're shortchanging yourself. Leave the timing of everything to God and the Universe. Focus on the important things that you need to do and leave the timing to work on its own.
When the stars align and the the time has come, your role will be to pay attention so you don't miss it and follow your divine intuition. Many a person has let their dream pass them by because they thought the time had passed and had stopped believing. Be careful to not let that happen to you.
With a growing understanding of these 12 (or 14) Universal Laws, you are on the precipice of a joyful existence. Influence the outcomes you desire and manifest your dreams through the awareness of how the universe operates and your part in it.
Behave generously and lovingly. Take intentional, inspired, positive action to make the world a better place. Acknowledge our interconnectedness with each other, everything in the universe, and the divine oneness. Act accordingly, and you will see the positive change you crave.
